Afar region

The Afar Region is the homeland of the Afar people. Its new capital as of 2007 is the recently constructed city of Semera, which lies on the paved Awash–Assab highway. The Culture and traditions in Afar is diverse like much of the country. People in Afar have traditionally practiced Islam but there are other less known practices such as the yearly feast called Rabena, which means “feast of the dead”, relates to beliefs in spirits of ancestors. In Afar, it is not uncommon to find small shelters that can be easily disassembled and reassembled to fit the nomadic pastoralist lifestyles which is characteristic in this region. Afar is also known for having their own information exchange system that is called Dagu. It’s an information system of oral communication of new information with set rules and regulations to avoid disinformation. Dagu is practiced everyday and is still one of the main and information sources for the inhabitants’ everyday life.


There are many places to visit in Afar, especially for the adventurous tourists. It is the birthplace of the first human beings found by archeologists such as Lucy and Ardi. The Afar Triangle, the northern part of which is the Danakil Depression, is part of the Great Rift Valley of Ethiopia, and is located in the north of the region. It has the lowest point in Ethiopia and one of the lowest in Africa. It resulted from the divergence of three tectonic plates in the Horn of Africa The southern part of the region consists of the valley of the Awash River, which empties into a string of lakes along the Ethiopian-Djibouti border. Other notable landmarks are Erta Ale, a continuously active basaltic shield volcano which is situated in the Afar Depression, a badland desert area. It is also the most active volcano in Ethiopia. The Afar region is also host to several national parks, the most famous being Yangudi Rassa National  Park.

Some of the main production areas are agricultural products such as sesame, cotton and oilseeds around the agricultural lands near the Awash River. Because the local community is pastoral, it is possible to work on meat productions, which are abundant in meat products.
